Buffalo Heart

One day while sitting on a rise in South Dakota’s Wind Cave National Park, watching a herd of bison graze down below, I wondered if there were anything stronger than a buffalo’s heart.

To withstand the brutal, unforgiving high plains winters, and the near-extinction of its kind, the critter’s heart must be laced with iron and granite. That thought inspired this design.

The bag measures 10″ x 7,” has a soft-fur back, partially beaded strap, and full-coverage front flap to protect the bead work.

Badlands Sunset

I once spent a September week in Badlands National Park, S.D., pulling up fence posts in the Sage Creek Wilderness Area so the land would be free of human-caused distractions. It was backbreaking but joyously rewarding work because I was healing once-wild land.

At one day's end, as I stared out over the miles and realized I'd helped a place go back in time, the sun starting sliding down behind the flat-top buttes that stood between me and the horizon. Thus, this design.

The elk-skin bag measures 9" x 13.5", has a fully beaded strap, and one-inch side and bottom spacers so the bag closes like a briefcase (instead of an envelope).

Black Hills Dream

I visit the Black Hills of South Dakota whenever possible because I find the gently rolling terrain ideal for getting lost, then found. It's also one of the most soothing, peaceful landscapes on which I've pitched a tent. I returned home from one trip with this design in my head.

The bag is 6.5" x 10.5" with foot-long fringe, and a fully beaded "rope" strap. The soft, cream-colored leather is similar in feel and appearance to old-style brain tanned.
